Description
Artist Statement
Bear uses surreal and symbolic imagery to address themes of isolation, loneliness, adaptation, and wilderness. Divided into five chapters with each its own theme, this video work uses improvised performance responding to the landscape in order to construct a narrative. Bear follows a solitary anthropomorphic bear character who one day finds itself alone in a strange and foreign environment, left to figure out how to navigate and survive its new surroundings.
My work playfully explores the tensions between fantasy and reality in our perceptions of wilderness and how it relates to the existentialism that permeates our modern lives. My installations, videos, and performances use absurdity to explore questions around human relationships with nature and the emotional connections that resonate through landscapes and objects.
What interests me is to create a space for viewers that fosters curiosity and wonder, and transports them into the realm of the wild. Ultimately, I aim to create poetic and engaging art works that are steeped in aesthetic, conceptual, and affecting qualities.
