Description

Artist’s statement

My husband and partner, Richard Rudnicki, died suddenly on November 4, 2019. Inspite of the care and kindness of friends and family, I was suddenly alone. Each day was black. And blank. And then Covid-19 struck, first coming as a distant warning, a whisper from a place on the other side of the world. Then getting louder and louder, it arrived on the doorstep--in Canada--in Nova Scotia. Everyone was facing this alone ‘together’.

Through the first quarter of 2020, I created one painting. Lost on the Marsh represents the alone-ness and loss that I was feeling—the dislocation from the physical world of human contact. Paired with this painting is the companion piece hike on the Marsh—another painting about solitary existence and constant searching, a meditation on the experiences of life, ironically painted before the world changed, a painting about Richard.
