Description

Artist Statement

When the first lockdown happened, I was finishing a life-sized white marble carving of a fitted bedsheet which had spent a year working on. Confined to my apartment and locked out of my studio, I had to re-imagine how my large-scale material-based sculptural work could adapt to this new reality. Instinctively falling back on my research, I came across Orfeo Boselli’s Osservazioni Della Scultura Antica. According to art historian EstelleLingo, it is the only Renaissance treaty entirely dedicated to the sculptural representation of drapery. To this day, Bosselli’s Osservazioni only exists as a limited facsimile edition of the Italian manuscript. During the quarantine, I, like so many others, ordered online a copy of this manuscript from a rare book library in Florence—where I was supposed to go for an artist residency that got postponed.
This project consists of typing (deciphering) the original Italian text, and to translate it using a Machine Translation software.
